When AI Starts Feeling Like a Relationship
Children and teens are wired for connection. They're also still learning what healthy relationships feel like.
An AI companion can be available at any hour, remember personal details, mirror a child's emotions, and provide seemingly endless attention.
That can make an artificial relationship feel surprisingly real.
The issue isn't simply how much time a child spends using AI.
Parents should pay attention when AI moves from being a tool a child uses to a relationship a child depends on.
WHAT PARENTS SHOULD WATCH FOR
Pay closer attention if your child:
Talks about an AI companion as though it is a real friend or relationship
Shares deeply personal or private information with it
Turns to AI instead of trusted people when upset or lonely
Becomes secretive about AI conversations
Spends increasing amounts of time interacting with a companion
Becomes emotionally distressed when access is interrupted
Receives sexualized, manipulative, or inappropriate responses
One behavior alone does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Patterns matter.

AI isn't only changing how children interact with technology. It can also be used to create fake images, clone voices, impersonate trusted people, and manipulate a child's digital identity.
That means parents need to think beyond what their child is doing with AI.
“What is my child doing with AI?”
“What could someone else do with my child's digital identity?”
Photos, videos, voice recordings, usernames, personal details, and other information all contribute to a child's digital footprint.
The more information available, the more important it becomes to teach children to protect what they share.

Keep real relationships, accountability, faith, and family connection at the center.
